Diet Mistakes

Saturday, February 28, 2009
  • Food-specific diets: Have you ever tried the cabbage diet or the fruit-only diet? These are just a couple of examples of diets that promote one "specific" food that causes weight loss. No matter how much you think you'll enjoy ice cream at every meal, inevitably you will get bored with eating the same food repeatedly. As a result, you'll eat less food than needed to maintain your weight. This type of diet will not teach you healthier eating habits or provide a balance of nutrients, and consequently is not effective for long-term weight loss.

  • High-protein, low-carbohydrate diets: One of the most recent trends in dieting, these diets are based on the concept that carbohydrates are "bad" and that everyone has some degree of insulin resistance, resulting in poor carbohydrate metabolism. Many proponents of these diets suggest that including carbohydrates in your diet will cause weight gain. The reality, though, is that eating more calories (whether as carbohydrate, fats, or protein) than you burn will cause weight gain.

  • High-fiber, low-calorie diets: As I've noted in many previous blog entries, fiber-rich foods play an important role in a healthy diet. They are a helpful ingredient of weight loss efforts because they provide bulk to the diet, which helps you feel fuller sooner. Be careful, though: if you plan to increase the fiber in your diet, be sure to increase your fluid intake at the same time or you may experience cramping, bloating, and constipation. High-fiber diets will help with weight loss only if you restrict calories in conjunction with addition of extra grains, fruits and vegetables.

  • Liquid diets: Consumers face a couple of different liquid diet options. Your local grocery store and pharmacy sell over-the-counter liquid meal replacements, which can be expensive and frequently add extra calories to daily consumption if not managed carefully. On the other hand are liquid diets that require medical supervision. These diets are usually very low in calories and may result in metabolic abnormalities if dieters are not carefully monitored. Neither type of liquid diet should be used for long‑term weight loss unless monitored by a health care professional. Radically changing your caloric intake in this way will not result in long-term behavior modification and healthy eating patterns.

  • Fasting: As a way to cleanse the body or jump-start a weight-loss program, fasting has been recommended for years. However, all that fasting really does is deprive your body of nutrients and decrease your energy, leaving you feeling weak and lightheaded. If the right nutrients are not available for your cells to use as energy, your liver will convert fat stores to ketones for use as energy (ketosis). Long-term ketosis can be harmful to your health.

No fad diet or gimmick will work magic for safe and effective weight loss. The following are some suggestions for ensuring a long-term healthy eating plan and getting your weight loss efforts off to an encouraging start:

  • Eat a variety of foods. Remember, a balanced diet will ensure that you get all necessary nutrients.

  • Get some physical activity every day. Calories in must be less than calories out to ensure successful weight loss. To keep "calories out" at a healthful level, make you get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day.

  • Include sources of fiber in your diet. They will add bulk and give you a feeling of fullness.

  • Choose a diet low in fats, saturated fats, and cholesterol. You do need to consume some fat for good health. Aim for no more than 30 percent of your total calories as fat calories, of which no more than 10 percent should be saturated fat calories.

  • Choose foods moderate in sugars. Foods that are high in simple sugars usually offer little nutritional value and will add unwanted calories.

  • Choose foods moderate in salt and sodium. Remember that salt has been added to many foods during preparation or processing, so it's not necessary to add extra salt at the table.

7 Fitness Dont's

Summer is almost here and we all want to have a nice body to strut around the beach or somewhere wearing the nicest clothes and all. Here are 7 dont’s if you are doing physical workout - in a gym or at your home…

http://www.topnews.in/health/files/little-exercise.jpg

1. Don’t lean on the machines - You may not realize how much your depending on the handle bars on stair-steppers, treadmills, ellipticals and other equipment you use to exercise. Do a posture check several times throughout your workout so you will get the most out of your time on the machine and avoid wrist and back strain leaning can cause.

2. Don’t overdo sports bars and energy drinks - Don’t assume that “fitness” food and beverages are low in calories or fine to eat in mass quantities. If you’re doing endurance exercise - two hours or longer - you will definitely need to refuel. Otherwise, pay attention to what’s in the bars and drinks you’re packing in your gym bag and how many servings you’re really consuming when you work out. Check in with a nutritionist for some healthy snack and diet options if you are relying on Luna Bars and Gatorade as meal replacements or for every snack outside of the gym.

3. Don’t undereat before you exercise - If you are training for an event, doing endurance exercise, or love intense workouts, it is especially important for you to have enough fuel for all that activity. Be sure your body’s getting the right amount of healthy carbs - vegetables, fruits, and whole grains - to help you maintain your energy.

4. Don’t overstay at the gym - It makes sense that if you pay all that money for a gym contract, you want to get the most out of your membership. Be sure to balance the time you are spending indoors on the treadmill and in studio classes with outdoor activities. Not only will it shake up your routine a bit, you may exercise differently, more intensely, calmer, or longer when you are outside

5. Don’t obsess over your abs - Of course, building a strong core is a key to being fit. But ignoring the rest of your muscles could throw your body out of balance. This can cause low back pain (and who needs more of that?), not to mention out-of-whack body image. Consult a certified personal trainer for ways to incorporate training other muscle groups into your weekly routine. You might just be able to capitalize on your fitness passion while re-framing your focus to toning, caring, and appreciating your whole body, not just one part of it.

6. Don’t lift too much weight - Check your self-competition or need to one-up the lady lifting next to you at the gym door. Instead, get some good advice from a trainer or strength and conditioning coach to find out an appropriate amount of weight for your body size, fitness level, and goals. From there, gradually add weight, being sure to listen to your body when you are struggling to do another set or just get the dumbbell off the ground. Remember that being challenged is good but lifting to the point of muscle failure is not.

7. Don’t take it too easy - If you’ve gotten bored with your daily treadmill session, don’t ever sweat anymore, or don’t really feel like you’ve worked anything out when you leave the gym, it may be time to amp up your exercise drill. Set some challenging and still attainable goals that you can work up to slowly, consider doing an interval workout to make things more interesting, or buddy up with someone who will keep you (and your routine) on your toes. Clearly, any activity is better than none, but why not make the time you invest in working out really worthwhile?

Clothes That Makes Us Look Fab and Fat

Saturday, February 21, 2009

What makes you look thin:

• Dressing in one color from head to toe— and it doesn't have to be black
• Choosing darker shades over brighter shades
• Plunging necklines that draw the eye to your face and away from other problem areas
• Pointy-toed heels that add length to the leg and muscle to the calves
• Avoiding low rise pants and the dreaded muffin tops that come with them
• A-line skirts flatter all figures

What makes you look fat:

• High waisted jeans as Jessica Simpson painfully showed us
• Shiny, clingy dresses that accentuate all the wrong places
• Tight tops that give the illusion of a baby bump when there isn't one
• Unflattering hem lengths
• Skirts with slits down the front (hint: side slits are much more flattering)
• Clothes that are too baggy
• Patterns, especially stripes

Hottest New Phones

Thinking of getting new phone?! see the list below I got from here

A couple of quick notes before we get started: While Mobile World Congress is primarily a showcase for European phones, many of the handsets on display will eventually make landfall in the States in one form or another—although exactly when (and for how much) is, for the most part, still up in the air. Stay tuned for exact release dates and pricing. Also: The phones I've listed below are just a few of the highlights from the show; for an exhaustive report, check out PhoneScoop's multi-part round-up.

Samsung OmniaHD
High-resolution displays are all the rage this year, and the OmniaHD's 3.7-inch, active-matrix OLED screen is, from all reports, quite an eye-opener—we're talking QHD (360 by 640-pixel) resolution, and even the jaded bloggers at Gizmodo raved, calling it "simply mindblowing … no matter how much you turn it, the color and contrast remain the same." And get this: the OmniaHD also records up to 720p (24 frames/second) video, a first (as far as I know, at least) for cell phones. That said, Gizmodo was bummed by the "lousy response" of the OmniaHD's interface.

Sony Ericsson "concept" phone: The Idou
Still in the conceptual stage (natch), the Idou garnered a truckload of buzz thanks to its gorgeous touchscreen and snazzy interface, but as Wired points out, it's the Idou's 12-megapixel camera that got the most attention. Twelve megapixels … heck, that's more than most still digital cameras, much less a camera phone. That said, megapixels aren't everything when it comes to image quality, and as one MWC griped to Wired, "It's crazy, a megapixel frenzy … how good can the optics be in a phone that size?" How good, indeed?

Here comes the sun: Solar-powered phones
Solar power is in when it comes to cell phones, and both Samsung and LG had a pair of sun-powered handsets on the show floor—although both manufacturers were light on the details. Samsung had its upcoming Blue Earth (which I blogged about last week) secured behind a pane of glass, while LG's unnamed solar handset looks like more of a concept than anything else. While I like the idea of solar-powered phones, it remains to be seen whether they'll actually be practical.

HTC Magic
The second handset running on Google's Android platform finally made its debut in Barcelona, and from all accounts it's a welcome, if not revolutionary improvement over T-Mobile's impressive but clunky G1 (which is also made by HTC). Engadget liked the smooth curves and thinner shell, as well as the new on-screen keypad (the Magic jettisons the G1's slide-out keypad). Still no word on when the Europe-bound handset will arrive in the U.S., unfortunately.

HTC Diamond2 and Touch Pro2
Also on hand from HTC: Updates to its touchscreen Diamond and Touch Pro handsets, including a tweaked interface that lets you quickly browse all your text, e-mail, and voice communications with a specific contact. CNET's Bonnie Cha liked the revamped, brushed-metal shells, as well as the Touch Pro2's new keypad (now with more space between the keys). That said, both phones are powered by the tricky-to-use Windows Mobile 6.1; Cha reports that HTC is promised upgrades for the upcoming WM 6.5 in the coming months.

More camera phones from Nokia and Samsung
Both Samsung and Nokia had a couple of hot new 8-megapixel cameras on hand: The Memoir, which I blogged about earlier this month (my review unit is in the mail, supposedly), and Nokia's N86, a dual-slider that (according to PhoneScoop) boasts Carl Zeiss optics, and OLED display, GPS, 8GB of on-board storage, Wi-Fi, and 3G.

Multi-core mobile processors
Not a phone, per se, but an exciting mobile technology that could be coming to a smartphone near you. VentureBeat reports that component makers ARM and ST-Ericsson was set to trot out its Cortex-A9 processor, a multi-core update to the ARM processors in such handsets as the iPhone and iPod Touch. What's so special about multi-core processors, you ask? Well, think two engines instead of one, which means more processing power, less overheating, and longer battery life. I like the sound of that.

kids love you!

Wanna know if your child loves you? Check out this 7 signs!

1. Your newborn stares into your eyes — he's actually working hard to memorize your face. He doesn't understand anything else about the world, but he knows you're important.
2. Your baby thinks about you even when you're not around. Between 8 and 12 months old, he'll start to scrunch his face and look around when you leave the room — and he'll smile when you return.
3. Your toddler throws wicked tantrums. Nope, those screaming fits don't mean he's stopped loving you. He wouldn't be so hurt and angry if he didn't trust you so deeply.
4. Your toddler runs to you for comfort when he falls down or feels sad. Kids this age may not truly understand the meaning of "I love you," but their actions speak louder than words.
5. Your preschooler gives you a flower picked from the garden, a finger-painted heart, a sparkly rock, or another gift.
6. Your preschooler wants your approval. He'll start to be more cooperative around the house, and he'll look for chances to impress. "Look at me!" will become a catchphrase.
7. Your grade-schooler trusts you with secrets, like his first crush or his most embarrassing moment. You're his confidante, even if he shies away from your hugs in public.

And hearing a great news about Lim Ding Wen - 9 year old whiz boy who recently created an Iphone application! From Singapore this famous kid is fluent in six programming languages, according to news. He created Doodle Kids - drawing game that he made for his sister who loves to draw! but turns out to be so in demand in App Store! this application lets players sketch with their fingers on the iPhone's screen and shake it, Etch-A-Sketch-style, to clear! It has gained 3 1/2 star as of this writing!
